SGL Co-packing is very experienced in a wide range of packing processes including assortment packing, bagging, flow wrapping, cartoning, pot-filling and clip-stripping. These and other bespoke packing activities are described on this page.
Assortment packing involves the creation of variety or mixed packs. They may contain either different quantities of similar items in various sizes, or variable quantities of a number of different items.
We operate fully automatic yet flexible filling lines, capable of weighing and mixing a wide variety of components, while dispensing them into containers of various shapes and sizes. The resulting packs have both the target weights/counts of individual products, plus the correct overall finished weights. Weights can generally be fine-tuned to achieve count accuracies within, for example, one sweet.
We fill plastic thermoforms with naked or wrapped product, and have equipment that assembles and glues cardboard boxes and cartons, while printing best-before dates, batch numbers, etc.
One of our core services, bagging involves the placement of product into flexible containers and sealing them. Bag filling options include:
- Standard or euroslot crimps
- Gusset bags/Doy bags/stand-up pouches (illustrated)
- Reclosable/resealable bags
- Special packs for attaching to magazine covers
- Nick knife (easy-open seal)
- Serrated knife
- Vertical crimps
- Horizontal crimps
Our facilities incorporate vertical form fill and seal (VFFS) machines, fed from either multiple bucket elevators or multi-head weighers. These produce bags and tubes from heat-sealable films, with variable bag sizes, and lengths from 60 to 320mm. Continuous feed is also an option. An extensive stock of forming sets is held on site.
Crimp styles include horizontal seal, with or without euroslot, and vertical seal. Available crimp depths include standard 12mm top and bottom, plus 12mm top and 25mm bottom.
All our bagging machines are equipped with Markem SmartDate coders allowing a varied range of coding to be added for each application.
Flow wrapping, or horizontal form fill and seal wrapping, is the process of wrapping product with a film and sealing it in one continuous operation.
Numerous styles of wrap are available, including pillow-type packs (single or continuous bandolier) with end-seals and a longitudinal fin on the base, to packs specially designed for confectionery and similar products. We can flow-wrap packs with backing or insert cards, and we are experts in using both heat seal and cold seal films. The entire range is covered from single-unit packs to large multipacks.
In addition, we offer an equally wide range of wrapping materials to meet almost every need. These include cellulose film, heat-sealable lacquered materials and plastics laminated to paper, film or foil. The equipment can incorporate a euroslot when required.
All lines are equipped with check-weighers, metal detectors and end-of-line case tapers. We have flow-wrapped everything from a single small item to many multiples or mixed items.
Our many flow wrapping machines are all equipped with date-coding systems for 'use by', 'best before', barcode, lot number and other markings. We take great care to ensure that barcodes, etc., are positioned so that no part is obscured in the sealing process.
Customers requiring a flow-wrap bag should note that it is possible to reduce the overall width of the film by 1015mm if a lap seal is used rather than a fin seal. We are happy to confirm the suitability of any film supplied; please contact our Sales Department for special sizes or non-standard requirements (visit Contact page
One of our core activities is placing customers' product into cardboard boxes or cartons and sealing them.
SGL Co-packing has nearly 30 years of expertise in this field, and we operate a number of horizontal and vertical cartoning machines, including those capable of creating Christmas selection boxes, biscuit boxes and tapered carton formats, for example.
We undertake manual/hand packing when either the packaging or product configuration dictates, or if the product is unsuitable for mechanised fulfilment. For example, we weigh and fill tubs and bags with friable biscuits by hand.
Pot-filling involves the filling of pots, buckets, jars and tubs with product before sealing them.
We have two dry product pot-filling lines one fully automatic and one semi-automatic capable of producing pots filled with single variant or random multi-product mixes. The lines can also add a heat-sealed foil or plastic lid. Like much of our other equipment, both machines can also be set up to operate in clean-room environments.
Clip strips (also known as impulse strips, display strips, hang strips, hook strips and brand merchandising strips) are hard or flexible plastic strips/ribbons, on which product is hung in vertical stacks for retail display and purchase.
For the manufacturer, clips strips are an excellent entrée to a new retailer, as they do not consume valuable shelf-space, yet allow the product to prove that it will sell. Our plastic tape strips can also be printed, so the system continues to merchandise even as the product sells through. Tape strips use an average 48% less plastic material, reducing packaging waste.
We were the first co-packer in the UK with a mechanised clip strip solution (illustrated) just one example of our continuing focus on innovation.
